DESIGN: The modern home, obviously influenced by the style of Frank Lloyd Wright is unique in the most accurate sense of the word in that, rather than following the ubiquitous Lowcountry style exhibited by numerous houses that use wide steps as their most notable centerpiece, the builders of this house, mercifully, saved the gorgeous 4 liveoaks that surround the home, merely cutting off various limbs when necessary, but never an entire tree, except the smaller one thatthreatened the all-encompassing view of the lake. In truth, this is the only home in the subdivision that has a head-on view, not only ofthe lake, but also of the fountain day and night.Also, the architect selected as the centerpiece of the front view of the home, an enormous live oak, with Spanish moss.The edifice is often referred to as a "glass" house as every room, except for the 3 baths and 1 of the bedrooms, affords views of the water. The master bedroom, on the first floor, features sliding glass doors leading to a spacious deck, while the bedroom's interior features a skylight in a far corner, through which stars and planets can often be seen as one lies in bed. However, the large master bath boasts 2 skylights, making the room so bright that often there is no need to switch on a light in the middle of the day. A large walk-in closet is part of the master bath suite, a great convenience. The spacious living room easily accommodates a mix of modern artifacts along with antiques, while the Ashley's baby grand Steinway piano is prominently placed in front of 4 sliding glass doors, leading to a huge screened porch overlooking the lake. The dining area, which can seat up to 10 at a table, occupies an alcove on the opposite end of the living room, where a sliding glass door leads to a small deck with steps leading down to the ground by the lake, should one wish to hop in a kayak for a spin,or try fishing from a decorated cement bench ,which will convey. The lake is occupied by over 2 dozen species of fish, and is the main gathering place for snowy egrets, great blue herons, who roost in the trees and a few very sociable and extremely NEAT mallards, who wouldn't dare leave unseemly messes on people's lawns. Upstairs, both bedrooms open out through glass doors onto a long deck surrounded by a bannister and featuring spectacular views way out to the marsh and beyond. The full guest bath upstairs is especially large with separate lavatories on each side of the shower/commode area, giving each guest an amount of privacy. Enormous closets line two walls of the upstairs hallway, along with shelves and other storage areas. Many updates have been made on the roof recently, and this past summer Terminix (at $6,000) totally enclosed the very top of the parking area beneath the house with still girders so that raccoons, palm rats, and squirrels cannot chew or scratch their way upward. A drive way flanks each side of the parking area underneath the house so that two cars can comfortably fit there on opposite sides of the house. Plus, there's plenty of parking space in the two driveways and on the street. In case of rain, one doesn't have to use the outside front steps, but can move groceries, etc. from the car directly into the ground door leading to internal stairs that are fully enclosed and which open (through a usually locked door) out into the living room near the hall leading to the kitchen. We have been told by several people that should it ever be necessary, that an elevator can be installed in the area occupied by the internal steps at about half the cost that it would be if the stairs were totally open, (as most are) and were not already completely closed in protected by two doors. Trip to beach at Sullivan's Island 8 min. if bridge doesn't open to let a boat through. Trip to middle of downtown Mt. Pleasant 5 min., and trip to downtown Charleston, depending upon time of day - 15 to 20 min.
